Work Holding Collets:
Flexible Systems

Flexibility is paramount in getting the most capability possible from today’s machine tools. The collet chucks and work holding collets offered by MD Tooling provide a wide range of interchange options, allowing manufacturers to reconfigure their machines to meet the demands of their workload. To provide the most accurate systems possible, we only offer push-to-close systems for main and sub-spindle CNC lathe applications. These are more accurate and maintain higher repeatability than the pull-back through-hole and pull-back stationary stop styles offered by other manufacturers. Purchase one spindle mount and interchange your work holding collets from job to job. Additionally, our very economical, high accuracy work holding collets are not brand specific, providing even further options for interchangeability. Using nothing more than a wrench to compress the collet, changeover can be accomplished in seconds.

Collet Styles

Our extensive inventory consists of standard collets in round smooth, round serrated, square and hex shapes. Square sizes are made to order. It is recommended to keep a small supply of Emergency Collets on hand for just-in-time machining when a permanent collet is not in your drawer. Emergency collets are thru-hardened for wear resistance yet soft enough to machine to fit your custom needs. . A face boring ring will hold the collet in nominal position for boring to size. In some cases, Emergency Collets are reusable.

Collet Sizes

We offer work holding collets in many sizes and configurations.
Here are some of our more popular sizes:
  • Push to close collets: 148E / 161E / 163E / 171E / 173E(B42) / 185E(B60)
  • Push to close collets in sizes : B32, B42, B52, B60, B70, B80, B100, B120, B150.

Benefits to Dead-Length

Collets are widely used for a variety of workholding operations. Even though widely used, standard collets can present problems during some work holding applications. These problems are the result of the basic clamping action used in securing a collet assembly. On standard collet assemblies when a collet is engaged, the gripping action is achieved by collapsing the collet around the workpiece. While this method is very efficient, the gripping action will affect the accuracy and repeatability of the workpiece.

To resolve this problem, we recommend the use of the Dead-Length collet. Unlike the one-piece unit of a traditional work holding collet, the Dead-Length collet system is more like a collet within a collet. The gripping action of the outer collet forces the inner or Dead-Length collet, against the face of the chuck nose. This contact forces the collet arrangement to maintain extremely accurate positional repeatability from part to part.
